Questions and answers about acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment method based on Chinese medicine that has been proven effective around the world. Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with Western medical treatments and has been found to complement each other. In addition to acupuncture, other Chinese medicine treatments include needle-free acupuncture (acupressure), dry cupping, herbal remedies and various forms of massage. Meridian Care uses meridian massage, which combines Chinese and Western massage techniques.

What happens during acupuncture treatment?

The first visit starts with an interview and an assessment of your health and the condition that needs treatment. We will also discuss general health factors and find out if there are any obstacles to acupuncture treatment. This is followed by a tongue and pulse diagnosis. Both are important assessment methods in Chinese medicine. During the treatment, the patient lies on the treatment table. The acupuncturist places acupuncture needles at carefully selected acupoints. The needles are kept on the skin for 15-20 minutes, after which they are removed and safely disposed of. The treatment may also consist of other treatments such as acupressure, meridian massage and dry cupping.

How long are the treatments? What are the effects?

The number of treatments varies depending on the condition being treated. Depending on whether the condition is chronic or acute, between two and ten treatments may be needed. Your general physical health also affects the length of treatment. Acupuncture treatments may combine different non-needle techniques such as heat lamp, acupressure, meridian massage, dry cupping or guasha.

Does acupuncture treatment hurt?

You will usually feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted into the acupuncture point. Acupuncture needles are also very thin. Many people who have had acupuncture treatment find it relaxing because acupuncture stimulates the nervous system.

Are the needles safe?

Yes. Acupuncture needles are very thin and durable sterilised needles. They are also disposable, so there is no risk of infection. The injection sites are disinfected with denatured alcohol before using the needles.
