Questions & Answers about Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment method based on traditional Chinese medicine, which has been proven to be an effective treatment worldwide. Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with Western medical treatments, and they complement each other.

Acupuncture has a history of 5,000 years. During treatment, specific points of the body are activated by inserting thin needles to promote healing and balance. According to traditional Chinese medicine, diseases result from an imbalance or blockage of body energy (qi). Acupuncture helps remove blockages and balance the functions of organs. Western medicine sees it from a different angle: the needles stimulate nerve points, which send signals to the brain. This releases specific hormones needed for bodily functions.

In addition to acupuncture, treatments of Chinese medicine include needleless acupuncture (acupressure), dry cupping, herbal medicine, and various forms of massage. Meridian Care uses a meridian massage that combines Chinese and Western massage techniques.

Acupuncture is an effective and safe treatment for all ages, at all stages of life, from infants to the elderly. Often, children respond well to treatment and recover faster than adults. Children can be treated, for example, with acupressure, where no needles are used at all. Other treatments for children also include reflexology.

Usually, you feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted into the acupuncture point. Acupuncture needles are also very thin, almost hair-thin. Many people who have had acupuncture find the treatment relaxing because acupuncture stimulates the nervous system.

Yes. Acupuncture needles are very thin, durable, and sterile. They are also disposable, so there are no risks of infection. The puncture sites are disinfected with denatured alcohol before using the needles. After acupuncture, you can continue your life as usual.

Acupuncture needles are much thinner than hypodermic needles. If the thought of needles scares you, remember that acupuncture needles are about the thickness of two hair strands.

Most people are surprised at how little the needle insertion feels. In fact, it’s not uncommon for patients to take a nap at the table.

Almost all pain conditions, such as muscle pain, knee pain, tennis elbow, back and limb pain, headaches, but also respiratory diseases (spring allergies, colds and flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma) can be treated with acupuncture.

Acupuncture can also help with eye diseases, orthopedic diseases (sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis), digestive tract disorders (reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, stomach pain or colic), neurological disorders including migraine, Horton’s headache, facial paralysis, trigeminal neuralgia, stroke, dizziness, frozen shoulder, chronic fatigue, sports injuries, and post-surgery pain.

Many have also found help for reproductive issues and gynecological diseases, e.g., irregular periods, menstrual pains, and infertility. Psychological imbalances can also be treated, e.g., stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia.

When done by a professional, acupuncture has no harmful side effects. Sometimes a small drop of blood or a feeling of tenderness on the skin can result from a needle prick. After cupping or guasha treatment, the skin may turn red.

We recommend eating a light snack before treatment because, on an empty stomach, you may feel dizzy after treatment.

Often, original symptoms may worsen after the first treatments, and you may feel tired. This is a sign of healing and that the body is seeking balance.
After acupuncture, you can continue your normal daily life. After treatments, we recommend everyone to drink plenty of warm water and rest a lot to maximize healing.

Instructions for Those Coming for Treatment

Before your treatment

Acupuncture treats more than just pain. It can also help with a variety of other issues simultaneously.

Do not cancel your appointment if you have a headache or pain on the day of treatment. If you can travel to the clinic, these issues can also be addressed.

If possible, avoid taking pain or anti-inflammatory medications before the treatment, so you can better feel how acupuncture assists with the pain.

Eat lightly before your treatment. For best results, consume a meal 1-2 hours before the session or a snack just prior to it, ensuring your body has enough energy to maximize the treatment’s potential. Receiving acupuncture on an empty stomach may cause dizziness or lightheadedness.

You don’t need to undress entirely for the treatment. However, I recommend wearing loose clothing so sleeves can be rolled above the elbows and trouser legs pulled up above the knees.

You may be asked to show your tongue or the therapist might take your pulse. A Chinese medicine doctor is interested in the state of your internal organs, and these methods help determine the best treatment for you. Similarly, as in hand and foot reflexology, areas of the tongue correspond to different body organ systems.

Be prepared to answer some personal questions. I may ask you various questions related to your health and lifestyle.

Acupuncturists use more than just needles. Although needles are our primary tool, as an acupuncturist (with at least 5 years of training), we have learned many other treatment modalities under Chinese medicine, such as acupressure, cupping, moxibustion, and Chinese herbal medicine.

One treatment session often isn’t enough to resolve your ailment. Everyone reacts to acupuncture differently. Some people get immediate relief after one treatment but may need a few more to further heal the body. Others might require several sessions before they begin to feel relief.
